Old Testament lament is more than just prayer in the face of suffering. It is also self-reflection and a purposeful challenge to God and human beings. In this study, Anja Marschall shows that when praying, people critically examine their expression of suffering; lament becomes an appropriation of prayer language, of beliefs, and of scope for thought and action.
